I‘ve failed to describe the feeling of looking int I‘ve failed to describe the feeling of looking into the eyes of an orangutan 🦧 The familiarity, the humanity in their gaze, the curiosity, the feeling of connectedness. No words suffice to express how it feels to to lock eyes with one of our closest relatives. But there’s so much more to Borneo! ✨ In this webinar I’ll share stories from Sabah, the Malaysian part of Borneo and why I believe it’s worth to choose this part of the island for a wildlife expedition. We’ll talk about the Borneo Big 5, a select group of animals that can only be found in close proximity in the Northeastern corridor of Sabah. You can join this free Webinar on October 19, 2026 together with our travel experts from @roxystravelplan who are organizing our guided expedition in September of 2027. During the session, we will cover:

Autumn nature getaway: Deep in Germany’s wild hear Autumn nature getaway: Deep in Germany’s wild heart 🍁🦌
(@thueringen_entdecken.de Advertisement) There’s a brief window every year—between late September and early October—when the forests of Thuringia feel almost otherworldly. We headed to what is called the „green heart of Germany“ to experience the fall season and specifically the various protected nature areas that are part of the greater landscape of Thuringia. Our favorite moments from this trip:
🌲 The Deer Rut: Sitting wrapped in blankets inside an observation hide in the Thuringian Forest, watching stags emerge from deep under the forest canopy.
🐾 Lynx & Wildcat Conservation: Visiting Wildkatzendorf Hütscheroda to see Eurasian lynx up close and learn about the rewilding initiatives connecting fragmented forests across Germany so these apex predators can thrive again.
🍁 Canopy walkways: Walking high above a sea of trees at Baumkronenpfad in Hainich National Park.
🦅 Lake Kelbra: Taking a guided tour with local naturalists to learn more about the RAMSAR protected wetland and its bird migration. 📍 Where we stayed:
• Waldhotel „Rennsteighöhe“ – perfectly located in the protected Thuringia forest with prime access to the deer rut (and brandnew rooms).
• Premiumchalets Hainichhöfe – beautiful A-frame eco-chalets right at the border of the primeval beech forest of Hainich National Park.
• Burghof Kyffhäuser – located in the forest with great access to both Lake Kelbra and Hohe Schrecke. 🔗 You can find the full eco-guide now on thetravelblog.at (link in bio)! @germanytourism

Thuringia autumn travel guide now on the blog! (@t Thuringia autumn travel guide now on the blog!
(@thueringen_entdecken.de Advertisement) Right in the green heart of Germany, Thuringia is a true hidden gem (I know, sorry - for the lack of a better word, but it really is!) for eco-travelers. The ecology of Thuringia ranges from the primeval, UNESCO-protected ancient beech forests of Hainich National Park to the coniferous forest ecosystem of Thüringer Wald (Thuringia forest). Why to go?
Thuringia offers one of Central Europe’s most intact forest landscapes and a commitment to ecological conservation. Visiting in early autumn—specifically late September through early October—unlocks two remarkable natural phenomena: The red deer rut as well as the autumn bird migration. What to expect?
You won’t find fancy resorts or fine dining options in the rural parts of Thuringia, but instead this part of Germany still feels relatively untouched by tourism. Rather you can expect nature tourism experiences where ecological protection takes precedence over mass tourism. Range of activities
From watching the red deer rut to guided birdwatching tour and nature walks, there’s plenty to do in Thuringia. You can visit the Wildkatzendorf Hütscheroda to learn more about lynx rewilding efforts and take part in their feedings of Eurasian wild cats or climb up into the canopy at the Baumkronenpfad in Hainich National Park.   When to visit
While Thuringia is a year-round destination, autumn is a special window for nature travel: Cool, crisp autumn evenings trigger the peak red deer rutting season. Later in October tens of thousands of cranes rest at Lake Kelbra–paired with spectacular golden foliage and morning mist.

Where to stay
We stayed at three different accommodations during our trip to Thuringia. The Premiumchalets Hainichhöfe were our favourite. These eco-friendly, sustainably constructed wooden chalets are located right at the border of Hainich National Park. Save this post for your next Germany trip!

Autumn in the heart of Germany🌲🦌 (@thueringen_entd Autumn in the heart of Germany🌲🦌 (@thueringen_entdecken.de Advertisement) Right now—late September into early October—marks the peak of the red deer rut (Hirschbrunft) across Central Europe. We travelled to Thuringia to witness this spectacle up close. This was my first time experiencing the rutting season and it’s been quite impressive to hear the guttural calls all over the forest and see the stags with their huge antlers. But as always, there’s more to the story. The Thuringian Forest, a vast protected biosphere reserve and nature park, is home to a thriving population of around 35,000 red deer, making it one of the most vital strongholds for the species in Germany. The core zone of the forest is designated as UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Vessertal-Thüringer Wald, which is where the deer thrive mostly undisturbed. Centuries of intense, single-species spruce farming for lumber left the Thuringian Forest vulnerable and you can clearly see the effects of climate change and the devastating bark beetle damages. The current protection efforts focus entirely on forest conversion („Waldumbau“). The goal is to move away from fragile monocultures and towards resilient, mixed deciduous forests. This includes reforestation, planting of millions of seedlings, but also feeding the deer in winter so they wouldn’t eat away the young saplings. To experience the rutting season responsibly, we joined a guided wildlife experience led by a local ranger and naturalist. We spent the evening inside a specially designed observation hide tucked deep in the woods in an otherwise inaccessible protected part of the forest. The hut features large glass windows that slide open, letting you take in unobstructed views, feel the crisp autumn air, and hear every sound without disturbing the herd or scenting the air. Seeing the dominant stags enter the clearing surrounded by their harems was truly special. Have you ever witnessed the deer rut in person? 📍 Thüringer Wald, Thuringia, Germany

Kafue national park, Zambia. 2026. From passion f Kafue national park, Zambia. 2026. From passion fruit cupcakes to remarkably skittish elephants. From near threatened Puku antelopes to mighty leopards.
From Savannah sunsets to acidic monkey finger fruit. There’s stories from Kafue that remain untold. It’s a place that asks something of you. You can’t come here with expectations or entitlement. Instead humility and gratitude should guide you. You’ll find a place that’s beautifully unpolished and makes you want to just be there, sit still, wait, let patience be the principle and fully immerse yourself. There’s not quite many places like this. Away from it all and yet you feel vibrantly alive. Join me here in 2027 to experience it yourself.

First set from Kafue National park, Zambia 2026. First set from Kafue National park, Zambia 2026. Wow, I don’t even know when and how to start. In May my annual expedition to Zambia happened together with an incredible group of people. Back home I got sucked into a whirlwind of projects and so the photos from Zambia kept waiting on my hard drive. Usually I try and edit directly after a trip, but sometimes life gets in the way. And so here I find myself months later finally going through the almost 25,000 images from the trip. I think I don’t need to mention that it takes a while to work through a pile of photos like this. I ended up editing 2,600 of those photos in the last few weeks (in batches; because otherwise I turn blind inbetween). And now here’s the very first set from our time at Musekese camp in the remote Kafue national park. This place is wild and sometimes can be challenging with high grass (especially in May) and no other vehicles or people around to exchange intel about wildlife. It’s all about the feeling of solitude and the thrill of reading tracks, following instincts and sometimes being rewarded in the end. It’s a place that teaches patience and gratitude in a subtle way. It’s not for those who want sightings served with a silver spoon. Where else in the world can you find this? Not too often I keep telling myself. And that’s part of the magic. You can join me here in 2027, I just released the trip details. Comment with “Zambia” if you want to know more ✨

Final (?) Langkawi flashback 😅 (@thedatailangkawi Final (?) Langkawi flashback 😅
(@thedatailangkawi | Advertisement) Secretly (or not so secretly) I’ve been working on editing the last few weeks. There was such a huge backlog that it took me quite a while to wrap my head around the sheer volume of photos. But once I started, flow state entered the stage quickly. I do call it the editing cave for a reason. Ask @raffaelpayr. He will tell you he’s like a widower when I dive into the cave. 😅 I disappear into the office and go days without properly reappearing—except for an occasional food intake. Usually he cooks in these periods, as I generally forget everything around me, including my own physical needs 😅 But now I’m happy to report that I have finished the edits of Malaysia and very soon also Zambia (alongside a family wedding and many smaller productions). That means I have processed more than 100,000 images in the last few weeks. Phew. Soon the busy autumn production period will kick off and it looks like I will have more to edit not too far from now. But first I can’t wait to be back in the field 🙌🏼 See you soon great outdoors! 😍
