Our tiny house in the vineyards of Hungary 🇭🇺 (@e Our tiny house in the vineyards of Hungary 🇭🇺
(@experience_balaton365 | Advertisement) At the very end of the village of Mindszentkálla there’s a path that leads into the vineyards. A small sign says „SAZÜ“ and points to a sketchy road that looks like its definitely illegal to drive on. But when you follow the path it will lead you deeper through the vineyards and lastly on a hidden forest road until you finally reach the destination: @sazu_____balaton. There’s two tiny houses hidden away here in a secret corner of the Balaton uplands—both scenically located overlooking the rolling hills and typical vineyards on the volcanic rock. It’s ancient land. At night you’ll see hares and foxes stroll around the garden. Green lizards roam around the bushes, their shiny colors peaking out under lavender plants buzzing with bees and bumblebees. We stayed only two nights, way too short if you ask us.

(@experience_balaton365 | Advertisement) When most people think of Lake Balaton, they picture summer crowds, sunbeds, and sailing boats. I‘m guilty as charged too 😅 Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake has been a beloved summer holiday escape for generations, but there’s more to it! What most visitors don’t realise is that the Northern shore of Lake Balaton is cradled by one of Hungary’s most significant protected areas. We got to explore various parts of the Balaton Uplands National Park, went on bicycle tours to discover European ground squirrel colonies, canoe rides through Ramsar protected wetlands and even a jeep safaris through a water buffalo reserve. We spent five days exploring the northern shore, its wetlands, its volcanic hills, and its nature reserves properly, and discovered something rather different: a landscape of surprising ecological richness, ancient lava fields, rare wildlife, and a growing scene of thoughtful, slow tourism that has very little to do with beach season (although it can be a lovely combo). You can now find my Balaton ecotourism guide over at thetravelblog.at where I’m sharing all my tips for a visit.
Three days on a small spit of Baltic coastline at Three days on a small spit of Baltic coastline at @horizontezingst. (Advertisement) Since years I’ve been wanting to visit the famous environmental photography festival at Zingst and I‘m so happy I finally made it! Horizonte Zingst is one of those festivals that’s hard to describe because it entails so much. But here goes an attempt: it’s an outdoor photography festival on a peninsula in northern Germany, built entirely around nature, people and their environment, and the stories images can tell about the world we share and live in. Over three days I cycled between open-air exhibitions, wandered a national park on the lookout for wildlife, watched a multimedia show about the last wild paradises on earth, attended photography talks and workshops and ended each evening on the beach watching hundreds of photographs projected into the dark with the Baltic behind me. 🌊 One of the most memorable moments? A conversation with curator @edda_fahrenhorst about the festivals concept and about the 20th anniversary edition coming in 2027—and trust me, that’s one you’ll want to be at! Save the date:
🗓️May 28–June 6, 2027
📍 Zingst, Germany A full blog post is coming to thetravelblog.at later this year with everything you need to know—the exhibitions, the workshops, the talks, and why the anniversary edition deserves a spot on your calendar. Thanks to @aufnachmv and @zingstagram for making this trip possible (and for hosting such a wonderful festival). I’ll be back soon! #AufNachMV #MecklenburgVorpommern #VisitMV #zingstagram #horizontezingst

Golden colors of Lower Zambezi. I just returned f Golden colors of Lower Zambezi. I just returned from another trip to one of my favorite places on earth. There’s something special about the light here, the scenery, the wildlife—the landscape. One of my guests put it like this: „It looks almost too beautiful.“ and I can see what he meant. While the Miombo woodlands in other parts of Zambia can look harsh and shrubby the Lower Zambezi‘s almost manicured Mopane woodlands, Winterthorn forests and open plains with view of the escarpment seem almost misplaced. As if you’re in a well cared for urban park, where gardeners cut the trees in shape. But if you know the way to a photographer‘s heart it’s when the scenery matches the beauty of the wildlife. Maybe that’s what draws me back here time after time. Thank you to @classiczambiasafaris and @pintoafrica for making these trips so special every time. @kylebranchprivateguiding @luke_zambia @classicztyrone @kafuephil_photo @joshngalaba
NEW TRAVEL GUIDE: Kafue National Park, Zambia 🇿🇲 NEW TRAVEL GUIDE: Kafue National Park, Zambia 🇿🇲 📍Save this post for all the insights into Zambia’s oldest and largest National Park. In Kafue you still get a sense of remoteness that is hard to come by in today’s world. Why to go?
As one of the largest parks in Africa-roughly the size of Slovenia—its scale and remoteness are its greatest assets, offering a staggering diversity of habitats and true wilderness experience. What to expect
Because it remains largely under-the-radar and vast, you can go for days without seeing another soul, providing a sense of solitude and authentic discovery that is increasingly rare anywhere in Africa. Range of Activities
With the Kafue river and its tributaries the park otters excellent boating next to traditional game and night drives and Zambia’s famous, expertly guided walking safaris. Kafue is a lot about tracking, reading signs of the bush and a sense of unparalleled wilderness. Excellent guides
In a place as remote and vast as Kafue the guides are the most important part of the safari experience. A lot of your time here will be spent tracking animals and exploring the immensity of the park. The guides here are among the best in the industry with decades of experience among them. When to visit
Large parts of the park remain inaccessible during the rainy season, so the main season runs from June to October, when it’s dry in Zambia. May is the start of the season in the Musekese sector, which allows for shoulder season rates, while Busanga Plains only opens in June for a very short season. Busanga Plains
In the very North of Kafue lies Busanga Plains: For half the year, it is an inaccessible floodplain, only to emerge as a vast, shimmering mosaic of golden grass and misty lagoons as the water recedes in June. There’s massive herds of antelopes and ungulates and some of Zambia’s most impressive lions also call Busanga home. Where to stay
Kafue National Park is so massive that you can be completely alone in parts like Musekese-where there’s no other camps. Find out more in the slides of this post!
@classiczambiasafaris @pintoafrica
Touchdown at Kafue National Park, Zambia 🇿🇲 This Touchdown at Kafue National Park, Zambia 🇿🇲 This time I’m staying at the guide tent, but during the last visit I also got the full Musekese experience in their exquisite guest tents—so here are a few shots to give you an idea 😍 I love love love the camp’s location at the lagoon with daily visitors in camp (think showering with a side of elephants), but the best part is the incredible privacy in a completely secluded sector of the national park with no other visitors around. Well and the wonderful team and excellent guides making a stay here truly special. Anyways, the photos from this time will have to follow, now we’re off to today‘s afternoon game drive on the lookout for Kinky Tail and Bazooka, the local celebrity leopards 😉 wish us luck please 🤞🏼😊 @classiczambiasafaris @pintoafrica #musekese #kafuenationalpark
Touchdown in Lusaka, Zambia 🇿🇲 Yesterday I arriv Touchdown in Lusaka, Zambia 🇿🇲 Yesterday I arrived and—although a bit brain dead from the long journey—I couldn’t stop myself from taking a few photos at the lodge. Let’s call it the warm-up for the safari to come 😅 And even though they’re not on Instagram, I will not hold it against them: Wild Dogs Lodge is such a lovely place to stay in Lusaka. If you ever find yourself here, say Hi to the house cat Nairobi (who I didn’t photograph yet). Tomorrow we’re off to the bush, so you won’t hear from me for a bit. Stay turned for more! #lusaka #wilddogslodge #zambia @pintoafrica
Return to wonderland 🇿🇲 Tonight I’m leaving for m Return to wonderland 🇿🇲 Tonight I’m leaving for my annual Zambia expedition. Excitement has been rising the last weeks and while I‘m packing my bags I can’t wait to see the first moments of wonder and astonishment in the faces of the people joining me this year. There’s something uniquely exciting about sharing a place you love dearly with people who have never been there before. To experience and rediscover it in a way for yourself through their eyes. And while leaving Austria I’m already planning the 2027 edition of the Zambia trip (which will happen in May again), so if you’re keen on joining me next year let me know—places tend to fill quickly! See you soon @classiczambiasafaris @pintoafrica @luke_zambia @kylebranchprivateguiding @classicztyrone @kafuephil_photo!
