(Advertisement) We just returned from a week of producing winter photos for @ayurvedaresortsonnhof (while also sneakily adding time for a mini Ayurveda cure with lots of massages for us). Last time we visited here was in August last year and we fell in love with the Ayurveda treatments and made a plan to return in winter then and there. While the garden at the resort is an absolute dream in summer, we also enjoyed the calm snowy days up here in the mountains of Tyrol. Now the only question is: When should we return next? This is Kenya 😉 But Timbuktu Travel was an incredible partner who planned this safari for me—guided by principles of conservation, community, culture and commerce. Let me explain what that means! 😊 Kenya‘s Northern Laikipia region is a place I keep returning to on every Kenya trip. It’s so different from the well-trotten safari circuit in Kenya, but oh so special. I’ve been anywhere from Ol Malo to Lewa and to Ol Pejeta, which are each part of the same connected ecosystem, but also each very unique. For years this part of Laikipia remained high on my wishlist: This is @segeraretreat and I finally got a chance to stay here! Segera is a 50,000 acre former cattle farm that has been transformed into an award-winning wildlife conservancy and eco-safari retreat. Today more than 350 people are employed at Segera, over 70% coming from local villages around the conservancy. There’s much more than the lodge, which I’ll soon show you. The lodge is luxurious, yes. But it’s the ethos behind it that fascinated me from the beginning. Segera retreat is also where @thelongrunorg was born and the principles of the 4 C were invented: It’s about promoting conservation, community, culture, and commerce. Together these form the building blocks to protect biodiversity, empower communities, promote their cultures, and contribute to the overall balance of the local ecosystem. First impressions from an especially meaningful sa First impressions from an especially meaningful safari with @timbuktu_travel to Kenya (Advertisement) 🇰🇪 As promised I’m continuing with a new set of Kenya photos straight away! I just returned last week from a very memorable trip (still have to pinch me!) 🤩✨ This journey was in the making for quite a while. Last set from the Maasai Mara (and Nairobi), Kenya Last set from the Maasai Mara (and Nairobi), Kenya 🇰🇪 Well, ironically this will be the last set of images from my trip to Kenya in November last year, but I’ll soon post images from Kenya again, this time from February 2026 😅 It’s been full circle coming back in such short periods of time, but also it proves over and over that it will never become boring to me. Not Kenya, not the animals, not even the safari itself. Even if it sometimes entails sitting in a vehicle for hours and hours without any significant photographic output. But the feeling of freedom, space and nature is quite unparalleled for me. As always I can’t wait to return! ✨ Thanks to @olimbamaracamp and the guides @losodickson and @johnsonmusukut for the wonderful moments on safari. Thanks to @ggkenya for always opening your home in Nairobi and for teaching your children the love for nature so exquisitely. May they serve as future guardians for our wild!

When we arrived in the Maasai Mara in November we were surprised that quite a few of the migration herds were still around. We closely monitored and followed their movements for a few days until our guides noticed that quite a few were headed towards a crossing point at sand river. And so on my birthday we decided to try our luck for a very unconventional and non-seasonal river crossing. A herd of zebras and some wildebeest had gathered at the riverbanks of sand river and we positioned ourselves perfectly for a potential crossing. Ours were the only two vehicles there, of course. Nobody plans to witness crossings in November. But the zebras and wildebeest were happily munching at the riverbank, until suddenly they seemed uneasy and turned around, storming back and away from the river. Seconds later a black rhino appeared on the other side 🤯 We couldn’t believe our eyes. None of this seemed real. Even now when I watch this video I took with my iPhone I can’t believe this happened. I was prepared to photograph zebras crossing and suddenly I find myself shooting a black rhino in the most unreal scene ever. What a birthday! (We ended up seeing all Big Five in just that day alone, but that’s another story.) Guided by @losodickson and @johnsonmusukut.

(Advertisement) A simple tented camp with easy access to the Maasai Mara combined with a vision to create a conscious safari company in an ecosystem that’s as fragile as it gets. This was my second visit at this wonderful little camp, built by @photo.panthera and @amoskipeen in an attempt to do things differently. Their shared ethos is what keeps me intrigued, their efforts in reforestation and female empowerment are the impact I want to support when going on safari. When we first stayed at Cyprianerhof Dolomit Resort in the summer of 2018, we left knowing one thing for sure: We wanted to come back in winter. It took a bit longer than planned, but this January it finally happened. And all the stars aligned: fresh snow, a sunny welcome and perfectly groomed slopes awaited us. Returning to a hotel is always a great opportunity to see how it has evolved (while–hopefully–staying true to its roots). Cyprianerhof is a family-run hotel, and just recently it has officially been handed over to the third generation. You can sense that transition in a positive way: there’s fresh energy and new ideas, but the warmth, attention to detail, and dedication to the region are very much the same. One thing that hasn’t changed here is the feeling of being somewhere genuinely personal. Meet the women of @oliveseed_foundation. (Advertis Meet the women of @oliveseed_foundation. (Advertisement) When we stayed at @olimbamaracamp we had the chance to also learn more about why they started @oliveseed_foundation. The goal is to directly support women from Emarti, the village just next to the camp. Women there don’t have employment opportunities. The Maasai men here are predominantely cattle herders and women usually tend to the household and kids, without access to paid labour. On the third picture you see Mary Sereyia Ntayia who works at Oliveseed Foundation as a seamstress to be able to pay for school education for her four children. The fourth and sixth pictures show Helen Silau Nchoko, the Women’s center project manager, who is responsible for the team and took the time to explain their work to us. In total 17 women work at the foundation since 2023 doing handcrafts and selling their products to generate additional income independently from their husbands. This helps them being able to contribute to the household income, which in return gives them a voice in decision making within the family. And it’s not just that. Next to the beadwork the women also sew sanitary pads, so girls can continue to go to school when they’re on their period. Last year alone they provided 2,000 girls with a set of pads—an incredible feat for female empowerment in the region! @olimbamaracamp is a small camp, just at the outskirts of the Maasai Mara, but they’re showing what positive social impact can look like. Olimba Mara is Maasai co-owned and co-founded by Amos Kipeen, who is the mastermind behind the community and conservation efforts—a clear indicator that participatory engagement of local communities goes a long way. The next step is to build a kitchen to supply the women with lunch, but also to train women from communities to become chefs. This is what socially conscious safaris look like!
