  • Discovering the highest dunes in the world at #Sossusvlei.
•
After the gates to the Namib Naukluft national reserve disappear behind us nothing but endless dunes adorn the horizon.
•
There’s only so far you’re allowed to go by car and the last few kilometers towards the famous #Deadvlei are just open for 4x4 cars.
•
Luckily we could take our car until the very end, although admittedly I got out after the first kilometer and let @lionheaded drive because I panicked to get stuck in the misty wet morning sand 😂 He managed to drive the sandy piste just fine... I might need another driving lesson for this 🤷🏻‍♀️
•
Thanks to @ascocarhire for partnering up with us on this trip, we spent over 3.000 kilometers on the road in #Namibia and loved having our fridge right with us 😉
  • Grazing elephant in the sunset.
•
Watching a herd of elephants walk through the bushes of @erindinamibia was the most calming experience ever.
•
It’s hard to imagine how silent these giants are. We were surrounded by about 20 elephants at this point and all you could hear was the cracking of a branch once in a while.
•
If you ever come to #Namibia make sure to stop at @erindinamibia to experience this. At this private reserve the guides are allowed to take you off road to have close-up encounters with the wildlife - a feeling you can’t describe! #erindi
  • First view of the incredible #Deadvlei.
•
The trees in this valley died over 700 years ago, when the Tsauchab river stopped carrying water.
•
They are now scorched by the sun and completely black, but don’t decompose because of the drought.
•
The dunes surrounding Deadvlei are believed to be the highest sand dunes in the world with over 300 meters height.
•
We stood on “Big Daddy”, the highest dune, to take this photo while the shadows of the tree began getting shorter and shorter due to the rising sun. We used up all our 2 liters of drinking water we had brought quickly after the ascent of the dune, but these views were worth it in many ways!

  • From where I walked down a dune at #Deadvlei.
•
After a rather unlucky start in the day, we finally managed to get to Deadvlei. We had initially planned to visit this place at sunrise, but a flat tyre crossed our plans.
•
So instead of being one of the first morning visitors we were late to the game. In the end this was not the worst thing to happen as the light only hits the salt pan of Deadvlei later in the morning, because the dune is blocking the sun for hours after sunrise.
•
So we hiked up Big Daddy - the ominous dune - and then walked down in a non-linear way. Much to the amusement of all the other visitors (who thought I must have had a hip surgery because I didn’t run down in a straight line 😂🙈). Little did we know that our path in the sand would later on make for a special backdrop!

  • Welcome to the #Strand!
•
Initially I had only planned to stay in Swakopmund for one night on our way further down south through Namibia. Turns out that was not my brightest idea!
•
Therefore we decided to return here to explore more of the area. The lovely people of the wonderful @strandhotelswakopmund offered to host us for two more nights - so here we are (again).
•
This gem of a hotel has the atmosphere of a Scandinavian or North-German luxury hotel, all located directly at the beach of Swakopmund.
•
I’ll write a full review of the hotel soon on the blog, but for now I’m out exploring #Swakopmund! #namibia
  • She‘s the queen of the jungle.
•
This majestic lioness is raising 3 cubs. When we met her the first day they were walking through @erindinamibia on the hunt for food. While the cubs are still too young (12 months), she made a short attempt of attacking a wilderbeast, which ended unsuccessfully.
•
Only one day later we found her and the three cubs again - resting in the shadow of a tree and next to them a huge wilderbeast prey.
•
It had been a successful morning for her and her family - even if this meant the death for another animal. Nature’s balance is sometimes harsh, but it works so well... until humans interfere.
•
Whenever you want to see lions, make sure you do it carefully. Don’t support institutions where you would be invited to touch or feed the animals.
•
At @erindinamibia you will see those lions in their natural habitat, but you would obviously not get out of the vehicle or even dare to touch them. However cute they might look, they are wild animals and belong to the wild. #namibia #erindi
