Offline days in #Gargellen (on assignment for @off Offline days in #Gargellen (on assignment for @offline.institute | Advertisement). From silent hikes to mushroom foraging—we spent a lot of time hiking around the woods in Gargellen. But don’t you dare call it forest bathing!🌲 The people of Montafon don’t like trendy labels. They simply go for a hike. In the woods. Like they always used to. 🄾 Armed with great grandmotherā€˜s herbarium we’re looking for oxalis and ladyā€˜s mantle and pluck the last mushrooms of the season. And quickly we don’t even realize that we’re offline. šŸ“Location: Gargellen, Montafon, Vorarlberg.

I'm back online. After a week #offline in the moun I'm back online. After a week #offline in the mountains with @offline.institute (Advertisement | Press trip). Here's a little recap! It's the first day. With shaky fingers I pluck the SIM card out of my phone. Knowing that in a few minutes I will hand it over. It will be locked away for 5 full days. 5 days without emails. Without Social Media. Without notifications. No red hearts flying over my screen. No Google Maps or weather forecasts. I will be offline. Disconnected. Somewhere in the mountains in Austria. It's called #offlinedorf. I'm among the first participants in the world's very first #offlinevillage. I came prepared. Ten days ago we had our first consulting call to prepare. We learn how to put away our phones more deliberately. How to regain control over rooms in our home, one after the other. No smartphone in the bedroom. At the dining table. At the toilet. I succeed at some, fail at others. Who knew going to the toilet without the phone was so boring? It's a Social Media creator of all people who started the offline movement. The mountain queen @lindameixner hit a wall a few years ago, when her body started showing symptoms from the constant stress of being overly present online, being constantly likeable on Social Media. First she went offline in a self experiment for 66 days. Then she founded #offtober and deleted all her Social Media apps together with a whole group of people for the month of October. Fast forward to 2023 and a group of more than 20 people find themselves in the small alpine village of #Gargellen. Welcome to the world's first offline village! šŸ‡¦šŸ‡¹ And so we put our smartphones in tiny, deeply symbolic metal cages and start the experiment. The goal: To learn to be more aware in the here and now. Away from our phones. Away from constant distraction and reward in the form of likes, comments and messages. And back in the offline world. The world, that used to be just called the world, and is now called the "real world". I'll soon share my learnings and take-aways on the blog, so stay tuned! And don't forget to put away your phones once in a while (I'm aware of the irony here) šŸ˜‰
SAFARI MAGIC šŸŖ„šŸ¤© Have you ever wondered how SAFARI MAGIC šŸŖ„šŸ¤© Have you ever wondered how to plan a #safari? šŸ¤” Where to begin? Which destination? The season? The camp? The wildlife you want to see? The budget you have? Let’s just say at the start it can be a bit overwhelming! 😳 Usually the questions I get are a bit like this: ā€žMarion, I really want to go on a safari in 2024! What would you recommend?ā€œ And then my answer would be a lot of explanations about seasonality - South vs East Africa, questions about budget and so on. Because there really is no simple answer to this! That’s why I have decided to write a comprehensive safari planning guide that should help guide all these initial questions that you might have when making these decisions! The guide covers every aspect - from choosing the right type of safari (yes, there’s different types) to considering seasonality, budget, location, flora and fauna, activities, and safety. Check www.thetravelblog.at for the full safari planning guide. #safaritravelguide #travelguide #safaritips
Hello Ntemwa Busanga camp! (On safari with @classi Hello Ntemwa Busanga camp! (On safari with @classiczambia | advertisement) šŸ‡æšŸ‡² At the southern edge of the iconic Busanga Plains you can stay at an incredibly intimate bush camp called ā€œNtemwa Busangaā€ by owner-run safari company Classic Zambia. Their ethos revolves around authentic safaris with expert guiding and an unspoiled nature immersion. And that’s exactly what you will get here! The camp only consists of four thatched bamboo chalets, each located under a large tree and with en-suite open air bathrooms. In this small setting absolute privacy and seclusion are guaranteed. From here you can explore the Busanga plains as well as the adjacent miombo woodlands on guided game drives, encountering the rich wildlife, including lions, leopards, and a myriad of bird species as well as 20 (!) different and some rare antelope species. Ntemwa Busanga Camp truly epitomizes the harmony between comfort and raw adventure—but don’t tell anyone, it’s a well-kept secret so far! ā˜ŗļø #classiczambia #visitzambia #busangaplains #busanga #kafue #kafuenationalpark #discoverzambia
On safari with @classiczambia (Advertisement | Pre On safari with @classiczambia (Advertisement | Press trip). Hereā€˜s part 3 of our #Zambia safari highlighting the impressive Busanga Plains—located in the very North of the Kafue National Park šŸ‡æšŸ‡² These seasonal floodplains are only dry and accessible in the months from July to October, a short time span when the waters retreat and bare a grassland that reaches as far as our eyes can see. In the flickering heat of the mid day sun you can sometimes spot shapes that are mere illusions - but sometimes also from fishermen who are allowed access into the park to provide livelihoods to their communities. It’s hard to imagine that they simply walk across these plains—knowing that there’s prides of lions, elusive leopards and even cheetahs closeby. What helps is to watch the behavior of the 20 species of antelopes that also inhabit the wetlands, when they get nervous there’s usually a predator closeby. For us mere mortals Busanga isn’t a walking safari destination, but one for extended game drives—where you’re rewarded with the mighty male lions of the region crowned with large dark manes—and their offspring! šŸ˜ We stayed at the thatched bamboo chalets of #NtemwaBusangaCamp which is a dream for everyone looking for authentic safaris with a very simple setup—here you’ll sit around the fireplace and hyenas and servals come to visit at night and all you can see is their shadows disappear in the corner of your eye. Let’s just say dinner is always exciting here! Thank you @kadyinvienna for the video and for playing nurse when I went down with the flu here! šŸ˜ #classiczambia #kafue #kafuenationalpark #zambiasafari #busanga #busangaplains #ntemwabusanga #ntemwabusangacamp
The most stunning dinner setup at #MusekeseCamp (b The most stunning dinner setup at #MusekeseCamp (by @classiczambia | Advertisement). Each evening when the sun sets behind the lagoon the team of Muskese camp sets the communal table for guests, lights the campfire and prepares welcome drinks when guests arrive back at camp from their afternoon game drive. Usually we would stay out in the field for sundowners and a night game drive and only return back in the dark, but that evening we decided to return to camp earlier to spend one sunset sitting at the campfire and sipping a ginger ale while the sky turns rose orange and gold. A perfect end to our stay at Musekese in Kafue National Park! šŸ‡æšŸ‡² Can’t wait to return here one day. It’s truly a magical place. #kafue #kafuenationalpark #musekese #zambia #discoverzambia #safari
From details to the horizon - why I always carry t From details to the horizon - why I always carry two camera bodies on a safari (@nikondach Advertisement). When I went on my very first safari I had brought several lenses, but only one camera body. Quickly I learned that I'm missing a lot of the scenes I wanted to capture, because of the time it takes to change lenses (and not to speak of the dust that always occurs in open vehicles on game drives). Henceforth I always brought two camera bodies on a safari! One equipped with a wider lens for landscapes, people, details like shrubs and flowers and a second body with a longer tele lens for wildlife shots. Some of the photos you see in this post were captured mere minutes apart. There's that scenic road you're driving on and just a bit later the male lion you've been looking for appears next to you in the long grass. Changing lenses would cost too much time (and very likely you wouldn't even get the shot). My current set up for a safari is:
šŸ“· Nikon Z 8 with a proper tele zoom lens (f.e. NIKKOR Z 100-400mm or the brand new NIKKOR Z 180-600mm)
šŸ“· Nikon Z 6II with my go to travel zoom lens NIKKOR Z 24-70mm 2.8 Of course you could bring much more - especially lenses - like wide angle lenses to capture the night sky or some room interiors in small spaces (I'm talking to you NIKKOR Z 14-30mm), but in those you could switch easier as you won’t need them during game drives - so in reality those two bodies are sufficient in 99% of the time. Let me know if you have any more questions about the gear I bring on a safari!

Breaking the glass ceiling (not! literally šŸ˜‰) w Breaking the glass ceiling (not! literally šŸ˜‰) with @ya_.tan in Zambia šŸ‡æšŸ‡² Tanya Yadav is one of those trailblazing women we got to encounter in Zambia. Once the youngest female pilot in the country sheā€˜s now flying a unique front and rear motorized bush plane that only three people in Zambia know how to steer. Much to her parent’s dismay she quit school when she was 16 because she knew she wanted to become a pilot. When she was still a young girl she had been hired to do interviews for a kidsā€˜ television show and that’s when she met her role model—a young pilot whom she interviewed. This moment changed her life forever! As soon as she finished the mandatory school years she left her home country, moved to South Africa and pursued her piloting license. Today Tanya is not only a bush plane pilot flying to the Kafue and Lower Zambezi regularly, but also an instructor who teaches flight students (many of them baffled by her youth and surprised when it turns out she’s not a student but actually leading the course). The best part about our encounter was that she joined our final game drive with @classiczambia in the Lower Zambezi on the way to the airstrip and she saw her very first wild dogs that very morning! šŸ˜ Here’s to many more women following their dreams and finding female role models to inspire them.
