(@tawi_lodge & @pintoafrica advertisement) Located in a private conservancy in the East of Kimana gate in an important wildlife corridor that connects Amboseli and Chyulu Hills, Tawi lodge is a beautiful eco award winning lodge. The main drawing card of the lodge is that super tusker Craig likes hanging around here in the vicinity, often directly within Tawiā€˜s own conservancy. Well and then thereā€™s the uninterrupted views of Mount Kilimanjaro straight from bed šŸ« šŸ˜ I would recommend the lodge as a family friendly option as it has really spacious rooms, is fully fenced and has a pool and garden to hang out for the kids. #tawilodge #amboseli
In case youā€™re wondering why I was always dreami In case youā€™re wondering why I was always dreaming of visiting Amboseliā€”hereā€™s the answer: Itā€™s an Elephant wonderland! (On safari with @pintoafrica | Advertisement) And who doesnā€™t love the gentle giants? The way their social structure holds up tightly, how the wisdom of the elder generation is cherished, how their soft padded feet straddle the ground without making any sounds. I believe unicorns were inspired by elephants. They are simply magical creatures. And in Amboseli youā€™ll see an abundance of elephants every day. The park is home to around 2,000 elephantsā€”spread across the savanna, marshlands and acacia woodlandsā€”all set to the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Itā€™s a scenery that leaves you speechless, and a very good reason to visit Amboseli. Yet, thereā€™s a few things to considerā€”and vast differences between the East and West, the main national park and the private conservancies. Home in Amboseli. This is @elewanacollection Tort Home in Amboseli. This is @elewanacollection Tortilis camp (as always expertly picked and recommended by @pintoafrica | Advertisement). Tortilis Camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, that adorns the landscape of Amboseli. While Amboseli can get quite congested in the Eastern sector, Tortilis camp is located in a private conservancy in the West, allowing for some exclusivity in the otherwise busy park. In full partnership with the community, Tortilis Camp is paying fixed rent to local Maasai landowners to preserve the Kitirua Conservancy, a 30,000 acre wildlife corridor bridging Amboseli and Tanzania. This corridor is used heavily and predominately by elephants, who are the main attraction in Amboseli. Elephants are present in high densities here and carry some of the largest tusks you can witness anywhere in Africa. Many of these herds and bulls have been the subjects of the longest-running study of elephant behaviour in the wild since over 50 years. Thereā€™s much to be said about Amboseli, but itā€™s best to witness it yourself. šŸ˜ Watch a herd of elephants cross the dry lake bed, led by their experienced matriarch who knows the marshlands await on the other side with fresh water. šŸ˜ Visit Craig, the famous super tusker, who stands witness to the need for protection of these last few remaining individuals with that particular gene allowing them to grow these large tusks. šŸ—» And then thereā€™s Mount Kilimanjaro towering above it all. Well, the short answer is: YES! ā˜ŗļø The long answer is a bit more complex: Kenya is a destination, that holds many treasures, but also needs quite some know-how to travel in a way that is not only memorable, but also intentional and responsible. When dreams come trueā€¦ we hiked up to TIGERā€˜S When dreams come trueā€¦ we hiked up to TIGERā€˜S NEST! (@tourismbhutan | Advertisement) šŸ‡§šŸ‡¹ We woke up pre sunrise that morning to heavy thunderstorms, not sure we would be able to make it up the mountain at all ā›ˆļø When we arrived at the start of the hike at 6am it was still raining heavily and we were only one of three carsā€”when usually it gets quite busy early onā€¦ Only 103,000 people visited Bhutan last year, but itā€™s quite likely most of them also came here: Taktsang monastery, also called Tigerā€˜s nest (because of an important Buddhist legend). The legend says Guru Rinpoche rode on the back of a tigress to get to the high altitude rocky outcrop, where he and his consort meditated in the cavesā€”making it an incredibly sacred place since centuries. To this day Tigerā€˜s Nest is the most prominent holy site of Guru Padmasambhava in all of Bhutan and an absolute bucket list item. The monastery is only accessible by foot and here are some tips if you ever plan a visit: ā° Start Early: Begin your hike as early as possible to avoid crowds and enjoy the tranquility of the monastery. The hike takes around 2-3 hours, depending on your pace, and the cool morning air makes the ascent more comfortable. We saw many people struggling in the mid day heat, when we were already on our descent. We used umbrellas to cover from the heat of the sun when it cleared up later (Paro is on a similar latitude like the Sahara desert! ā˜€ļø). šŸ„¾ Prepare for the Hike: The trail to Tigerā€™s Nest is steep and can be physically demanding. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. Trekking poles can be helpful for the steep paths. Be ready for the altitude, as the monastery sits at around 3,100 meters. We wouldnā€™t recommend to ride on the horses or mules even if thatā€™s on offer. We just took it slow with many small breaks. šŸ§¦ Dress Code: To enter the sacred Buddhist site modest clothing is required: Long pants and sleeves, no hats or shoes. Wear thick socks as the cave floor is cold. šŸ“· Photography: is strictly prohibited inside. Cameras and phones need to stay behind in lockers. But most importantly: enjoy! šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

The 3 day festival included masked dances that depict the subduing of evil spirits as well as donation ceremonies. Public life stands still for those days in the region as everyone flocks to the monastery to pray and gather merits. We stayed here for two days and I was truly sad to miss the third and final day of the festival, where a large Thangka painting is unveiled for the public to be seen just for a few hours once a year.
