A few more scenes from Romania this summer 🇷🇴 There’s much more to see & do in Romania, but on this trip I wanted to focus on the elusive brown bears. We stayed in a small village in Transylvania, about 1,5 hours Northeast from Brasov—surrounded by nothing but forests, farms and the eastern rolling hills of the Carpathian Mountains. Here we found an estate that had been in the hands of a Hungarian noble family until the 1940s, when communist leadership expropriated nobility and left the Mikes family exiled and deported to camps. The tragedy of this story isn’t what this post should be about, but it’s thanks to this family’s involvement in the conservation of the bears, that we got to see them. It took the family’s descendants decades to have their restitution claims fulfilled and the property returned in their hands. After living in Austria for many decades the Mikes family are owners of their estate since 2005 again—and are carefully restoring and transforming it for cultural and eco tourism. The estate spans 500 hectares of forests, which are home to wild brown bears, but also to lynx, wild boar, deer, foxes and many more species. It’s through eco tourism, but also sustainable forest management and ecological research in partnership with universities that bears are protected and valued, although there’s also increasing pushback in Romania because of human wildlife conflict. According to a report from the Guardian the Romanian government more than doubled its authorised cull of brown bears in 2023 compared to previous years. Over 480 bears were authorized to be culled to avoid “overpopulation”. This shows a concerning trend that might lead to what has happened in Austria. Here we don’t have any viable brown bear populations left. And when an occasional bear ventures across our border from Italy or Slovenia often enough they are being declared “problem bears” and put down to protect farm animals and children. I truly hope that we find mechanism to coexist and leave room for these wild animals—and when it means that some forests cannot be used recreationally by humans without the guidance of a ranger then so be it. We don’t have to hike everywhere!

Final set from @ayurvedaresortsonnhof (Advertiseme Final set from @ayurvedaresortsonnhof (Advertisement). I might’ve filled my camera roll with too many mountain scenes that week, but also plenty photos of hands… 🙏🏼 To me the healing hands are emblematic of this place. The hands that pour oil over your body. The hands that lift away tension. The hands that produce the vegetables in the hotel’s own farm. The hands that create plates of magic in the restaurant. The hands that smoke incense every morning. The hands that create a lush garden paradise. It’s the Ayurvedic therapists, but equally it’s the gardeners, the housekeepers and the service. It’s many hands that create a special place. And @ayurvedaresortsonnhof is such a place. Thanks to @andrealeitner_communications for the opportunity.
I‘m back from a week-long Panchakarma cure at Ay I‘m back from a week-long Panchakarma cure at Ayurveda Resort Sonnhof in the Austrian Alps (@ayurvedaresortsonnhof | Advertisement)🌿✨ I came in a bit skeptical… but this place has translated the ancient Indian tradition into something that feels approachable and effective for European needs. Here’s what made it so special (and why I’d recommend it if you’re curious about Ayurveda or just craving deep rest): 🥗 Ayurvedic cuisine – balanced, flavorful dishes tailored to your needs and treatment plan.
💆 Daily oil massages & treatments – deeply restorative, helping the body release tension and the mind relax (aka fall asleep on the massage table more than once 😅)..
🧘 Yoga & meditation – gentle practices to reconnect with your breath and center.
🏔️ Nature immersion in the Alps – simply being surrounded by this mountain landscape adds its own layer of healing. After just seven days, I feel calmer, grounded, and more connected — my body relaxed, my mind clear. If you’re looking for a retreat that combines ancient wisdom with an alpine retreat, @ayurvedaresortsonnhof is a gem. Thanks for having us!

First set from our stay at @ayurvedaresortsonnhof. First set from our stay at @ayurvedaresortsonnhof.
(Advertisement) I’ll admit, I’ve been a bit skeptical about this. I‘ve been on traditional fasting cures before, but an Ayurveda cure was a different story. Also I really despise cumin and cilantro, both staples in Indian cuisine 😅 So let’s just say I was unsure how much I would like this… But this cure felt absolutely heavenly, the oil massages were deeply intoxicating and the Ayurvedic cuisine there is fantastic (and very different from what I had feared 😅). At @ayurvedaresortsonnhof, the ancient Indian tradition of Ayurveda has been beautifully adapted to Western needs: that’s why it’s called European Ayurveda. There’s more emphasis on treatments that work for western people who are less connected to nature and more prone to stress-related diseases. So it goes beyond just the physical element. The combination of daily oil massages, nourishing plant-based cuisine (there’s a daily vegetarian Ayurvedic and a vegan dish on offer—but also a fish option for those of you who aren’t vegetarian), yoga and meditation sessions and the healing calm of the Alps, that’s what makes this so effective. Daily morning rituals like getting up at sunrise and just spending time caring about nothing but my own well-being, that’s what left me in a state of deep relaxation. After seven days, I feel my nervous system has slowed down, my body deeply relaxed, and all my muscles have been massaged out of any tension. And that asks for just one thing: to return and repeat this, no matter what Ayurvedic type you and I might really be ✨ Thanks to @andrealeitner_communications for the introduction and to @ayurvedaresortsonnhof for having us—and the wonderful team!

The prints I’m sharing here are just a glimpse of the breathtaking images that carry a much deeper purpose: raising funds to protect wildlife and wild spaces at a time when conservation support is being cut worldwide. Every print purchased is more than art for your walls — it’s a lifeline for species and communities that depend on thriving ecosystems. I’ve been keeping something truly special to mys I’ve been keeping something truly special to myself… until now. 📸✨
(@mastercardaustria | #OneTapAdventure Advertisement) These are the photos from my lifelong dream — fulfilled spontaneously thanks to @mastercardaustria. I booked my bear-watching adventure in Romania with my Debit Mastercard — no cash to carry, no exchange rate surprises, no hidden fees. Just one tap… and I was on my way. That evening in the hide I couldn’t believe my eyes. When booking the tour I had asked the ranger how likely it is to see bears and he laughed at me and said „Oh don’t worry - you’ll see bears.“ Bears. Plural. Well he didn’t exaggerate! We saw as many as 20 different bears — curious young ones, protective mothers, and a few impressive males guarding their territory. Looking back at these photos, it’s so fascinating to see the different personalities of the bears, the scars that tell their stories and their unique ways in which they moved through the forest. But most importantly I can still feel the magic of that day.

One tap. One adventure. Priceless. Thank you, @mastercardaustria, for making this possible. 🐻💛
